Cygwin
Cygwin представляет собой не отдельную программу, а целый пакет программ и инструментов, реализующих Linux-окружение в системе Windows.
Благодаря Cygwin многие программы для Linux удаётся собрать и использовать в системе Windows. Такие утилиты, как gzip, bzip2, tar, less и многие другие, без которых ни один сисадмин Linux не может представить себе жизнь, прекрасно могут работать и в Windows в среде Cygwin.
Cygwin, однако, не даёт возможности запустить программы, скомпилированные для Linux без изменений: чтобы программа заработала в Cygwin, надо её скомпилировать отдельно для Cygwin.
Установка Cygwin происходит достаточно просто: во-первых, надо скачать особый установщик, в котором можно выбрать необходимые программы из обширного списка. В предлагаемом списке программы упорядочены по категориям. Например, можно выбрать для установки только набор консольных утилит, а можно установить все игры и сервер XWindow.
Как только нужные программы выбраны, начинается загрузка файлов с выбранного зеркала архива Cygwin. Причём скачанные файлы можно оставить, чтобы далее устанавливать программы уже из локальной директории со скачанными файлами. После завершения установки имеет смысл добавить директорию установки Cygwin в переменную окружения PATH, чтобы легко вызывать программы из консоли. В PATH директорию установки может добавить и сам установщик.
С установленным Cygwin работа в Windows покажется очень удобной тем, кто привык работать с консольными утилитами Linux, ведь что бы ни говорили про эту систему, консольные утилиты Linux/Unix весьма функциональны и удобны в работе, чего не скажешь про программы-аналоги в Windows.
