Как и Microsoft Terminal Services Client, VNC использует протокол обмена между компьютерами, с помощью которого передаются действия пользователя: работа с клавиатурой, перемещения и клики мыши. От удалённого компьютера в реальном времени поступают данные обо всех изменениях на рабочем столе, так что при достаточной скорости сетевого подключения Вы вовсе не заметите разницу между работой локально и удалённо.
Как и любой продукт, позволяющий управлять компьютером по сети, VNC предоставляет различные способы аутентификации. Возможна аутентификация по паролю и NT-аутентификация. Также есть возможность включить шифрование передаваемых данных. Для пользователей, работающих в домашней локальной сети, есть также возможность и вовсе отключить аутентификацию.
Для ситуаций с небольшой пропускной способностью сети, VNC-клиенту можно указать меньшую цветность: передавать не 24 битный цвет, а 16 или 8-битный. Это позволит значительно сократить объём передаваемых данных по сети, что приведёт к уменьшению времени ответа на Ваши действия.
Следует помнить, однако, что любая программа, позволяющая получить удалённый доступ к компьютеру, является потенциальной брешью в безопасности. В наше время, когда Интернет пролез уже в каждый дом, стоит уделять защите персональных данных повышенное внимание. По отношению к VNC это означает, что следует настроить адреса, с которых возможен доступ для управления компьютером, ограничив их только теми, с которых Вы заходите. Следует обязательно включить аутентификацию с нетривиальным паролем. Крайне нежелательно делать VNC Server доступным всем подряд из Интернет, если для этого нет особых веских причин.
