MediaWiki представляет собой высокопроизводительный, масштабируемый сервер Wiki, подходящий для сайтов, обрабатывающих миллионы просмотров в день. MediaWiki используется популярным ресурсом Wikipedia, а также другими ресурсами Wikimedia.

MediaWiki проста в установке, но, в то же время, допускает тонкую конфигурацию. MediaWiki поддерживает установку различных расширений, коих насчитывается более полутора тысяч.

MediaWiki многоязычна: пользовательский интерфейс переведён на более чем 300 языков, причём администратор может редактировать перевод.

Содержимое MediaWiki может включать математические формулы. Допускаются файловые вложения разных типов; очень легко организуются галереи изображений.

При редактировании материалов отслеживаются все изменения. Можно посмотреть на изменения, внесённые конкретным пользователем. Есть возможность посмотреть конкретную версию материала, а также разместить на неё ссылку.

Содержимое упорядочивается по принадлежности к категорям. В тексте статьи можно укзать несколько категорий, к которым принадлежит статья. Обычно список категорий выводится внизу страницы статьи. Кроме этого, содежимое может быть структурировано с использованием пространств имён. Так, например, в Wikipedia разделяются страницы пользователей от энциклопедических страниц.
