Бесплатный почтовый клиент с открытым исходным кодом. Работает как на Windows, так и на Linux и Mac OS X системах. Поддерживает работу с почтой по протоколам POP и IMAP.
Графический интерфейс пользователя отображает сообщения в закладках. Есть удобная функция поиска по содержимому сообщений. Поддерживается шифрование и электронная подпись сообщений с использованием персональных сертификатов и протокола OpenPGP.
Thunderbird может работать с несколькими учётными записями почты и NNTP, принимая почту в локальные папки. Поддерживает обработку сообщений в соответствии с заданными пользователем правилами (фильтрами). В фильтре можно указать условие и действие над сообщением: например, можно указать правило, по которому Thunderbird будет помещать все письма от некоторого отправителя в отедльную папку. Сообщениям можно назначать метки (теги), что также позволяет упорядочивать сообщения.
При настройке нового почтового подключения к почтовому серверу, Thunderbird пытается "угадать" настройки подключения, автоматически подбирая возможные варианты.
Thunderbird может расширяться путём установки дополнений. Также поддерживаются и сменяемые темы оформления.
