MenuetOS - операционная система, замечательная тем, что написана целиком на языке ассемблера.
В отличие от печально известной системы "Болгенос", MenuetOS представляет собой не один из известных дистрибутивов Linux с изменёнными обоями рабочего стола, а полностью независимую, хотя и весьма простую, операционную систему.
MenuetOS разрабатывалась так, чтобы избежать лишних "прослоек" между частями операционной системы и прикладными программами. Это приводит как к простоте всей системы, так и к заметно меньшему потреблению ресурсов. Разработка прикладных программ для этой системы на языке ассемблера не представляет труда, в том числе и обращение к графическому интерфейсу системы. Примеры программ приводятся на сайте MenuetOS.
MenuetOS поддерживает сетевую карту и протоколы TCP/IP, подключение USB-накопителей, воспроизведение звука. Для этой операционной системы доступен порт игры Quake.
Хотя MenuetOS нельзя использовать в качестве настольной операционной системы, как замену "полноценной" ОС, тем не менее, она может быть интересна разработчикам программного обеспечения как наглядный пример работы с различными системными устройствами. Также, несомненно, эта ОС заинтересует энтузиастов и собирателей различных компьютерных "диковинок". В самом деле, эта операционная система умещается на одну дискету объёмом 1.4 мегабайта.
