When it comes to teaching our kids new things, we as parents are pretty confident that we have a handle on teaching them good habits.
As the saying goes "with age comes wisdom" so as we get more years under our parenting belt we all become our own parenting experts, right?
But when it comes to exercise maybe it's time we look to our little leaguers for some expert workout advice...and the younger they are the more we can learn.
That's because as we grow and develop from young infants to hard headed adults we begin to lose our mobility for natural movements due to inactivity and bad habits.
You Don't Know Squat
The squat is a perfect example. It is probably the most natural human movement that was learned long before barbells were invented.
Squatting was a required natural movement for our fellow cavemen to do "#2" long before toilets came to be, as humans are meant to assume a squatting position for elimination and did so for thousands of years.
It was not until the middle of the 19th century that we started the practice of sitting instead of squatting.
Even today, people in developing countries seem to squat all the time instead of sitting on a chair...and it's not because there isn't an IKEA nearby.
They can sit like this for hours while most of us are lucky to stay in this position for a few minutes before drooling over our Lazy Boy.
Just think about it the next time you bend over to grab a book from a low book shelf or you squat down to put in a DVD.
When you lean over in a squat position you will probably bend over on your toes opposed to keeping your heels flat to the floor and your knees behind your toes.
(I am getting lots of practice lately, thanks to my daughter, as of this morning I am currently on my 23rd viewing of Elmo's Pottie Time DVD.)
This poor mobility is what makes us vulnerable to common back injury. Wither it's in the gym or at the office, when we squat we should be initiating the movement starting with our hips and glutes not our quads; the muscle above our knee.

Time To Play
Besides being the best squatters, our kids know how to get exercise without knowing they are "exercising". When we were young, we called running, jumping and climbing "play"...when we grew up we called it a workout.

But these movements are fun and challenging because they train your body the way it was meant to move in real life by pushing and pulling heavy awkward objects.

So instead of inviting your buddies over for poker night that only seems to increase your waistline and decrease your wallet, have your own little strongman contest in your backyard. Try flipping the tire as many times as you can in 1 minute, then while your lungs are on fire, hang on to the grass as you collapse in a pool of sweat. Trust me, a cold beer tastes a lot better after you've earned it.

Do Management Consulting Strategists actively pursue “micro-firms,” businesses with less than 10 employees (DTI, 1995, p. 11), as potentially profitable clients, or do they view this business segment as outside of their target market and generally unprofitable? The primary purpose of the proposed research is to address this issue by contrasting the views and attitudes of Strategic Management Consultants towards micro-firms, with their actual commitment of resources towards attracting micro-firm owner/operators as a profitable market niche. A secondary goal is to discover a model for profitable strategic consultation to micro-firms.
Throughout almost ten years of experience in e-commerce consulting, I have increasingly found that our firm’s strategic business consulting to micro-firms is the part of our business offerings most referred by past clients to new clients. Indeed, over the past two years our firm has out-sourced up to 80% of our web design work and we are now restructuring the company to provide ongoing strategic management consulting aimed specifically to the micro-firm owner/operator both on and offline.

Identification of the Relevant Literature
Recently, there has been a shift away from defining micro-firms as a simple subsection of “SMEs” (Small / Medium sized enterprises). This trend is imperative as the behaviour, needs and characteristics of micro-firms are significantly removed from those of other SMEs (Jay & Schaper, 2003; Becherer et al., 2006).
Micro-firms rarely engage in formal business strategizing (Robinson, 1982; Robinson & Pearce, 1984) even though it has been found to be essential to their success (Robinson, 1982; Robinson & Pearce, 1984; Fields, 1992; Becherer et al., 2006). When micro-firms do prepare formal strategic documents, it is overwhelmingly of the business plan variety and designed for securing outside funding (Reid et al. (1993); Hogarth-Scott et al. (1996); Stone & Brush (1996); Atkins and Lowe (1997)). This mandatory business plan is usually the only formal strategic effort by micro-firm owner/operators and after the document has served its fiscal purposes all other strategic thinking ceases (Anderson, 2001). Calvin W. Fields (1995) argued that a lack of formal strategy in micro-firms has stunted their growth and has often led to complete business failure.
There exists a dearth of literature on the role of Management Consultants in micro-firm strategy. Moreover, a large share of the published writing focuses on government-sponsored programs (Robson & Bennett, 2000) and then claims such programs to be under-utilized (Curran & Blackburn, 2000) and that external consulting is under-valued by micro-firm owner/managers (Smith et al., 2000; Mole, 2002; Jay & Schaper, 2003; Beresford & Saunders, 2005).
There is presently no published scholarly material on the specific approach of private Canadian Management Consulting firms towards micro-firms.
Key Research Questions
Micro-firms firms account for 74.4% of Canadian businesses (Statistics Canada, 2003). And with small business aggregate revenues1 accounting for 25% of Canada’s Gross Domestic Product in 2003, (Statistics Canada, 2003) micro-firms represent a major economical pillar of the Canadian economy.
Given the significant size of the micro-firm market in Canada and the apparent need for professional strategy implementation for micro-firms at many phases in their development (Dyer & Ross, 2007), coupled with the expertise of Management Consultants and their need to continuously attract new clients (Freeman, 1998), the following questions are raised:
* Do Management Consultants view micro-firms as a viable target market for their services?
* What percentage of total revenue is generated for management consulting firms by micro-firms?
* What amount of resources is allocated to attracting, retaining and advertising directly to micro-firms clients?
* What amount of resources is allocated to developing commercially viable programs geared towards micro-firm owners/operators?
* Has the amount of capital engaged in the micro-firm segment increased relative to the overall growth of this business segment?
* What existing for-profit management consulting strategies exist to serve the micro-firm segment?
Methodology:
Exploratory Pre-study
An informal exploratory study will be facilitated to ascertain the current consulting climate in Metropolitan Toronto (Canada). Such preparatory background work will focus the ultimate questionnaire design and deepen and update the researcher’s market knowledge. This “pre-study” will consist of several semi-structured interviews with Management Consultants, both independent and those belonging to a firm. This sample (N ≥ 3 firm-based and 3 independent consultants) will contain professionals in the metropolitan area of Toronto, Ontario – Canada’s largest city. This location is ideal for its proximity and inherent reflection of our firm’s competitive marketplace. Interviews will range from 10 – 20 minutes in duration and will be audio recorded. Again, no formal attempt will be made to code these responses; the procedure is functioning as an industry primer.
Formal Study
SUBJECTS
The subjects for our study will be practicing Management Consultants in the Metropolitan Toronto (Canada) area. Considered will be both firm-based and independent Management Consultants. The subjects will be chosen due to their common marketplace and their access to the same geographical pool of micro-firms.
DESIGN, DATA COLLECTION & ANALYSIS
The research will take the form of a survey with questionnaires mailed to the subjects with postage-paid return envelopes. The minimum sample size will be ≅ 100 individuals for each of the consultant types, firm-based and independent. The maximize size of the study will be determined by the finite size of the defined market, empirically expected response rates and statistical prudence.
Data analysis will feature relevant charts and tables displaying statistical procedures which may intuitively include: ANOVA, Chi-squared tests and Pearson Correlations. The ultimately implemented analytical tools will reflect the goodness of fit to the final questionnaire, the quantitative tools acquired during coursework and the suggestions of the supervisor. Various leading statistical packages such as SPSS® will be employed to strengthen the analysis.
Timescale:
The proposed timeline is in keeping with the broad guidelines provided by The Business School:
* 18 – 24 months: Research Modules, Coursework and Literature Review (The “pre-study” mentioned in the above “Methods” section will also be performed during this stage)
* 12 – 18 months: Research Design, implementation and evaluation
* 12 – 18 months: Prepare written thesis for formal submission

1 The Government of Canada (via Statistics Canada) defines Small Businesses as having less than 50 employees, thus this figure represents an unavoidable revenue overstatement due to the differing definitions and limitations of Statistics Canada reporting. A recent Australian study by Jay and Schaper (2003) may help shed some light on the aggregate revenue of the micro-firm segment in a comparative economy. This too, however, has its limitations as the Australian Bureau of Statistics defines micro-firms as having less than five employees, small businesses as having between five and 19 staff and a medium-sized firm having between 200 and 199 persons. What that really means is getting off Facebook. While I have accounts on Twitter, Google+, and LinkedIn, I rarely visit those sites. But Facebook is different. For some reason, even when I vow not to visit, it draws me in. Calls to me. Compels me to log in and browse my feed. And yet when I do, more often than not I walk away aggravated, not inspired.
So why do I keep going back?
I'm not sure, but it's definitely time to step back and re-evaluate.
I joined Facebook in 2007 to keep an eye on my daughter when she went away to college. In 2008, like many other business owners, I began using it to market my business. I began amassing a huge friends list, accepting friend requests from everyone who sent me one.
For awhile everything was hunky dory. Until it wasn't anymore.
I'm not exactly sure when things shifted, but shift they did.
Every time I logged on, my feed, inbox, and notifications were overloaded with marketing and promotion. It appeared that many of the folks who wanted to be my friend, really just wanted another person to market to. Shotgun marketing at it's finest. Probably because it was, and still is for the most part, free.
When I began to realize earlier this year that I was more bothered than inspired every time I logged onto Facebook, I made the decision to cut back. I pruned my friends list of more than 5000 people I didn't know and kept only friends, family, and people I've actually met or done business with.
Problem solved, or so I thought.
Yes, it cut down on most of the annoying marketing and content in my feed that I really didn't care about.
Still, I continued to find myself feeling uneasy after spending time on Facebook. When I asked myself whether the time I spent perusing what my friends were sharing had enriched my life in any way, more often than not the answer was "no."
Yes, it's great to see pictures of my daughter and her friends, since she's so far away. But we talk nearly every day, and there are other ways to share pictures.
Yes, I suppose it's fun to see what old high school friends are doing. But honestly, I didn't hang out with most of them in high school (just knew them) and I haven't emailed or picked up the phone to call any of them since reconnecting on Facebook. So it starts to feel like I'm just being a voyeur on their lives 30 years later. And, all I can say is, A Facebook stalker is so not who I want to be!
Yes, I suppose it's fun seeing what other friends or old business acquaintances are up to... but far too often I walk away feeling envious or less-than because they appear to be doing better than I am. Or, the posts scream "look at me" and I find myself asking, Why does Facebook seem to bring this out in people?
Yes, I like finding interesting articles, blog posts, videos, and deals that I wouldn't otherwise know about. But I'm beginning to ask myself if easy access to these things is worth the aggravation Facebook so often stimulates.
I don't know why it bothers me so much.
Perhaps it's tied to my frustration with the business coaching and success industry, and all the research I did when I wrote my book. I learned so much when I took a closer look at the industry, and perhaps I can't unsee what I saw or unlearn what I learned. I also don't like how what I see affects my opinions about other people. I find myself judging them based on what they post, good or bad, and deep down that doesn't feel good. When people share rants, I find it too easy to jump on the bandwagon... and I'm trying hard to live from a more positive perspective vs. complain about things I don't like. Plus, on more than one occasion, Facebook has come between me and my husband. Did you know more than a third of divorce filings in 2011 contained the word Facebook, according to a U.K. survey? No, we're not headed for divorce court, but it does make me ask, Do we really need this affecting our relationship?
For all these reasons, it's time to pull the plug, at least temporarily, and see what happens.
I need to step away.
Maybe not forever, but at least for a time. I need to experience life without Facebook. I'm sure I can find other ways to access the information that's important to me. I can subscribe to blog feeds or email lists. I can search Google. And, if I really want to connect with someone or find out how they're doing, I can shoot them an email, pick up the phone, or walk down the street and knock on their door.
Why I'm deactivating my profile and not just taking a Facebook vacation.
I took a Facebook vacation a few months ago. I did not go on the site for weeks. And life was better. But eventually Facebook began calling me back. I thought, Oh, I'll just check in once a day. That lasted for a short while, and before I knew it, I was back to periodic checking, and my frustrations were once again rising.
There's something addictive about Facebook. So as with most addictions, I need to be cut off. So when I get bored, or don't feel like working on what I'm working on, I can't, with a quick click of the mouse, hop over to see what's happening on Facebook. If I'm not connected, I can't visit. If the door is locked, I can't open it. It's as simple as that. (I'm going to try keeping my Facebook pages live, and only deactivating my personal profile... but if I find myself unable to resist checking those pages I will deactivate them as well. Hopefully that won't be necessary, but I guess we'll find out!)
Am I worried I'll miss out?
Absolutely. For five years it's been a steady stream of information into my life. A connection with the outside world. A place to share information and opinions. And, seemingly, a view of what people are up to (seemingly, because I know it's only the picture they're choosing to paint). All from the comfort, convenience, and anonymity of my computer.
But I'm ready to give it a shot.
I'm calling it my Anti-Social Media Experiment.
I don't know how long it will last. But I want to see if, or how, my life changes without Facebook. I want to see if I really need it to stay connected to the people who really matter. I want to see how or if it will affect my blog and my business. And quite frankly, I think it will force me to think of other ways to connect, and market. Ways that may be more effective, but that get pushed to the back burner when it's easier to just hop on Facebook and call it done.
Everyone says you have to be on social media if you have a business or a book. I wonder if that's really true? And, I suppose the only way to find out is to test that theory. So that's another part of this experiment.
